The Adirondack State Park - New York's quiet place - is comprised of 6-1/2
million acres of wilderness, 46 mountains over 4,000 feet, 31,500 miles of rivers and 2,300
lakes and ponds that must remain "forever wild". The Adirondack park has 50 species of mammals,
220 species of birds, 66 species of fish and 2,500 miles of foot trails on which to find them.
The Jack Rabbit Trail is a 25-mile cross-country ski trail named for "Jack Rabbit" Johannsen,
a skiing pioneer who lived to the age of 111. The trail links Keene, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake
and ends (or begins) at Osgood Pond. It offers 60 miles of nearly unbroken walking, mountain biking and
skiing.
Osgood is approximately 2-1/2 miles long by 2 miles wide and 3 miles down the channel. There is
access into both Jones Pond and Church Pond (via Little Osgood) from Osgood Pond. The pond is
16 feet deep making it warmer and more conducive to swimming than deeper, colder ponds.
A warmer pond means warm water fish to catch (especially nice for kids and beginner
fisherpersons!) which include large and small-mouth bass, northern pike, perch, sunfish and
bullheads.
Just across the road at the Visitor Interpretive Center, there are several walking
and hiking trails.
The trailhead for St. Regis Mountain is approximately 3-1/2 miles down Keese
Mill Road which is located just near the entrance to Paul Smith's College. Other nearby hikes are
Debar Mountain, Azure Mountain and
Blue Hill Mountain, all located in relative proximity to Osgood Pond. While in Saranac Lake,
Mt. Baker is a short hike with good views and, just outside of town, you can choose from
Ampersand, Haystack, McKenzie or Scarface Mountains. There are many other large and small hikes
available in our region, which can be found on topographical maps or in hiking books of the area.
Osgood Pond is only 15 minutes from Historic Saranac Lake (voted
one of 12 Distinctive Destinations in the US by the National
Trust for Historic Preservation in 2006), 30 minutes from Lake
Placid restaurants, shopping and Olympic venues and 2 hours from
Montreal, Canada.
